World number one Scottie Scheffler fired a nine-under 63 during the first round of the American Express in California, marking his first PGA Tour appearance this season.

Despite not having played this year and yet to capture the American Express title—which offers a winner’s purse of £1,236,000 ($1.656m)—the 29-year-old is just one stroke behind the leaders in La Quinta, shared by Australia’s Min Woo Lee and the US’s Pierceson Coody.

Scheffler is tied at nine under with several competitors, including Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre and former US PGA champion Jason Day. This tournament features an unusual format where players compete across three different courses before the cut on Saturday.

Scheffler started strong, making birdies on five of his first six holes, while Coody recorded consecutive birdies to shoot a 29 on the back nine.
