Daniel Dubois has options for the second defence of his IBF World Heavyweight Title.
The 27-year-old was upgraded from interim to full champion when previously undisputed Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt. Dubois legitimised his status with an emphatic knockout against Anthony Joshua.
Post-fight all the talk was surrounding an immediate rematch, but ‘AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn recently cast doubt on the return fight happening next due to Dubois being set to fight in February and his man not having the time to train properly after his recovery.
The IBF has allowed its champion to make a voluntary defence against a top 15 ranked fighters. The top two names, Agit Kabayel and Martin Bakole, have been ordered to fight each other to determine the next mandatory challenger.
That leaves a list of top heavyweights like Zhilei Zhang, Frank Sanchez, Otto Wallin and Justis Huni. One recent addition to the rankings is British Champion Fabio Wardley, who recently destroyed Frazer Clarke in the first round of their rematch. The hard-hitting fan-favourite intends to push on to world level with that victory, and has been mentioned in reports as the man to face Dubois next.
Speaking to TalkSPORT, the champion was asked about Wardley’s most recent performance.
“Wow. It was a good performance. He didn’t give [Clarke] a chance to get into it. He took him right out of there.”
Asked specifically about the prospect of fighting Wardley (18-0, 17 KOs), Dubois said he was open to it.
“Bring them all on now. All these contenders. If it makes sense, they can all get a piece … [The decision] will be everyone’s. My dad, the team, Frank Warren and finally for me to get in there and do the business. We’ll all sit down and decide what route is the best. What’s next. I can’t wait for it though. Who’s next?
“I’ve done the business. I’ve gone through some good battles in my last three fights and I’m up there now. I need to stay at the world level and continue that run of form. To be the best you have to beat the best, and that’s what I’ve been doing and I’m gonna continue doing that. I’ll go down in history and become a legend.
“Whoever I’ve got to destroy and take out of there, I’ll do it. I’m on form now and my confidence and everything is just right up there. I’m feeling on top of the world. Whoever I’ve got to destroy and put out of their misery, I’ll do it.”
News is expected soon on who will get the shot at the belt.
