Seamus Power recorded a second-round score of 68 at The American Express in California, bringing his total to nine under at the midpoint of the tournament. American players Blades Brown and Scottie Scheffler are tied for the lead at 17 under par.
Beginning his round on the tenth hole at La Quinta Country Club, Power made birdies on the 11th and 12th holes, but then went on a streak of pars that concluded with a bogey on the second. He managed to recover by gaining strokes on holes three, five, and six, placing him in a tie for 48th at the halfway point.
Eighteen-year-old Brown delivered an impressive 12-under-par 60, catapulting him to a tie for first place with the top-ranked Scheffler. Playing at the Nicklaus Tournament Course, Brown started with a birdie on the tenth hole, followed by an eagle on the next. He then made nine additional birdies during his round. However, he missed an eight-foot putt on the last hole, which kept him from making history.
Brown needed just one birdie in his last three holes for a potential 59, but ended up with three pars, just shy of becoming the youngest player in PGA Tour history to achieve a sub-60 round.
Scheffler, the world’s number one, added a 64 to his opening round of 63, with eight birdies on the same course. South Korea’s Si Woo Kim sits in third place after shooting a 65, while compatriot SH Kim is tied for fourth with America’s Matt McCarthy.
Andrew Putnam also matched Brown’s spectacular performance, shooting a 60 after starting with a 72, which included an eagle at the 11th and ten birdies.
This week’s tournament will feature the first three rounds played across three different courses: the Pete Dye Stadium Course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and La Quinta Country Club. After the first 54 holes, the cut will take place on Saturday, with the top 65 players and ties moving on to the final round at the Pete Dye Stadium Course.
