Last week, manager Alvaro Arbeloa declared Real Madrid’s academy the best in the world on two occasions, leading more clubs across Europe to view La Fabrica as a promising talent pool. Defender Victor Valdepenas has caught the attention of these clubs.
The 19-year-old made his debut this season under Xabi Alonso, starting in a 2-1 victory against Alaves. Until recently, Valdepenas was part of Arbeloa’s Castilla squad, where he played 16 matches in the третья league, scoring once and providing an assist in 12 starts. He is known for his speed and direct playing style, capable of operating both as a central defender and a left-back.
Arsenal is reportedly interested in luring Valdepenas away from Real Madrid. Though he is under contract until 2029, which gives the club significant control over his future, The Athletic reports that the Gunners are keen to sign him. This isn’t the first time Arsenal has been linked to him, as rumors surfaced last summer. Borussia Dortmund has also shown interest, but both Valdepenas and Real Madrid seem focused on his development at Valdebebas.
Valdepenas’ opportunities with the first team have been limited since Alonso criticized his defending during Alaves’ goal, and he hasn’t featured in the senior squad since. However, Alonso did reportedly apologize to him and praised his overall performance in a subsequent press conference.
With David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger set to be out of contract this summer, there might be a chance for Valdepenas to step up in central defense, although he will be competing with Joan Martinez, who is already seen as a candidate for the senior team. Additionally, new signing Alvaro Carreras has secured a position at left-back, while Fran Garcia and Ferland Mendy also pose barriers for Valdepenas. While their futures remain unclear, it’s likely only one of them will depart the club.
