“Breaking News: Track and Field Coaching Faces New Challenges and Celebrates Key Achievements in Dynamic Field” see more 👇 👇 



Track and field coaching is a dynamic field, with recent developments highlighting both challenges and achievements.

Coaching Changes and Appointments

In July 2024, several universities announced new head coaches for their track and field programs:

Florida State University: Matt Kane, who had been an assistant coach at FSU since 2019, was promoted to Director of Track and Field, succeeding Bob Braman after his 21-year tenure.



Purdue University: Tony Miller was appointed as the head coach for both track and field and cross country. Miller’s previous coaching roles at Louisville, SMU, and North Texas were highlighted as significant qualifications for his new position.

Georgia State University: Ricardo Page returned to his alma mater as the head coach for women’s cross country and track and field. Page expressed enthusiasm about leading the program to dominance in the Sun Belt Conference.

Stephen F. Austin University: The track and field team added two new coaches, Nate Scales and Felipe Valencia, for the 2024-25 season, aiming to strengthen their coaching staff.

Tarleton State University: Bobby Carter was hired as the head coach for Texan Track and Field and Cross Country, bringing a fresh perspective to the programs.

Kansas State University: Travis Geopfert, a four-time National Assistant Coach of the Year, was appointed as the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, marking a significant leadership change.

Toni Minichiello’s Return: Toni Minichiello, former coach of Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill, resumed coaching despite a permanent ban in the UK for sexual misconduct. He was seen coaching Polish athlete Adrianna Sulek-Schubert at a track meeting in Poland. This situation raised ethical questions, as the ban applied only within Great Britain.

Lyman Hall’s Triumph: Lyman Hall’s boys indoor track and field team won the CIAC State Open championship, their first since 1993, with a total of 51 points. Key performers included senior Thomas Conklin, who won the 600 meters, and junior Ethan Rich, who set a personal record in the high jump at 6 feet 8 inches.



Missouri’s Track and Field Success: The University of Missouri’s track and field team achieved record-breaking performances at the Tyson Invitational, showcasing the program’s strength and potential.

Coaching Transitions and Appointments

In addition to the previously mentioned appointments, several universities have made significant changes to their coaching staffs:

Alton High School: Becca Adney, an alumna and former runner, was appointed as the new boys and girls cross country coach, succeeding Tammy Talbert. Adney brings a strong background in exercise and sport science to the role.

Benzie Central High School: Athletes Nora Grossnickle and Ava Iverson signed national letters of intent to compete in collegiate sports, with Grossnickle committing to Ferris State University and Iverson to Aquinas College. Their coach, Asa Kelly, praised their leadership and dedication.
