Trump, who had previously bestowed upon Woods the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019, clasped his hand, shared a humorous remark, and gave the PGA Tour icon a heart-warming embrace. Trump then went on to pay tribute to the remarkable achievements of black athletes, lavishing praise on Woods in particular.
We’re pleased to be joined on this really beautiful afternoon at the White House by hundreds of incredible members of the African American community, many of whom are making history themselves – including one of the greatest athletes of all time who just said hello to,” Trump remarked.
The man who matched Sam Snead’s number one record for the most PGA Tour wins ever and a man who has 15 majors. And he’s got a long way to go, too. I was with him a week ago, we played. I think he’s got some left, Adam (Scott) doesn’t he? Couple of Majors maybe. Maybe more than that.
But Tiger Woods he’s an incredible athlete, an incredible guy. Thank you for being with us today, Tiger. He got the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he proudly wears today. Senator Tim Scott, here, what do you think? You never got the Presidential Medal, what do you think? Maybe someday.
“And also Adam (Scott), thank you very much. Adam, as Tiger will tell you, is one of the greatest players of all time. One of the great modern players. He has 32 wins worldwide and winning the Masters also. He’s also something very special and a great golfer.
Adam, even though he doesn’t quite come from our country, he sort of does, right? He’s here a lot, he comes from another nice place like Australia and they’ve been very, very good for us.”
Trump then appreciated PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, bluntly declaring: “Jay, thank you very much. Appreciate it very much.”
Trump, a keen golfer and owner of numerous golf resorts, has taken an active role in attempting to bridge the gap between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour amidst their rising prominence. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the PGA Tour was nearing an agreement with the Public Investment Fund, the Saudi-based financial backers of LIV Golf, following a meeting with Trump.
The former President was requested to participate in discussions with PIF by Scott and Monahan. Trump and Woods share a lengthy history. The duo enjoyed a round of golf just a few weeks ago in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Trump presented Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom back in 2019.
