USA Gymnastics star Simone Biles is determined to continue inspiring many people, especially those going through mental health problems.
According to a recent study, Biles’ openness about her mental health struggles has encouraged more women to face the issue head-on.
“In a recent survey of 1,000 women by [Female Quotient], 63% said they felt more inspired to prioritize their mental health after Simone Biles openly discussed taking time off for her well-being,” a post by the Child Mind Institute reads.
“Additionally, 61% reported feeling more comfortable being transparent about their struggles.”
Biles saw the post and couldn’t be happier with the impact she has made. While she understands that the journey is far from over and there’s still a lot of work to be done to inspire more people to tackle the problem, she promised that she’ll continue being an advocate for mental health.
“On this journey together,” Biles wrote on her Instagram Stories while sharing the post from the Child Mind Institute.
Simone Biles has been an advocate for mental health after she herself struggled with it in the last couple of years. As her fans would know, the 11-time Olympic gold medalist sparked global conversation about mental health when she withdrew from the Tokyo Games because of the issue.
The superstar gymnast suffered a case of the twisties, which the Cleveland Clinic described as “a mental block that creates a dangerous disconnect between mind and body while gymnasts are airborne.” Biles then took herself out of the Tokyo Olympics, citing the need to prioritize her mental health.
Gymnast Simone Biles competes at the Paris Olympics at Bercy Arena on August 3, 2024.
Ever since then, Biles has preached the importance of taking care of one’s mental health. During the 2024 Olympics, she even credited it for her success, saying “being in a good mental spot” has helped her reach where she is today, per CNBC.
Sure enough, Biles’ impact in helping encourage people deal with mental health problems cannot be understated.
