At a time when she was on the verge of giving it all up, Jennifer Randall helped her achieve Olympic glory.

abby ThomasĀ is fresh off winning three gold medals at theĀ Paris 2024 Olympics, but there was a dark period in her life when she was on the verge of giving it all up. The only thing that kept the American sprinter from surrendering her Olympic dream was the persistence of her mother,Ā Jennifer Randall.

For many,Ā Thomasā€™Ā story began with that historic 200-meter heat at Tokyo 2020/2021, when she finished third behindĀ Elaine Thompson-HerahĀ andĀ Christine Mboma. While some would have been content with just making the podium, that wasnā€™t enough for Thomas.

Three years later, theĀ Stade de FranceĀ witnessed the sprinter not onlyĀ win gold in the 200mĀ but also add two more Olympic championships to her list of achievements, in the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m.Ā ThomasĀ is currently at the top of the Olympus, but this would not be the case if it were not for the example and influence of her mother.

In a recent interview with theĀ LA28Ā project, which promotes theĀ Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games,Ā ThomasĀ recalled that her mother forced her toĀ continue runningĀ when she was on the verge of giving up.Ā ā€œMy mom forced me into it,ā€Ā the runner jokingly declared in an episode ofĀ 28 seconds with LA28.

Gabby ThomasĀ is one of those very rare cases where a student excels both on the playing field and in the classroom. However, that can also make them lose focus. In the case of the Atlanta native,Ā ā€œI wanted to play softball with friends.ā€

ThomasĀ excelled at softball, but her mother was convinced she could become aĀ track and fieldĀ star. In an interview withĀ The Daily Show, the speedster recounted thatĀ RandallĀ told her at the time,Ā ā€œI had a light in me, and that I was going to shine very brightly.ā€

However, the defining moment forĀ ThomasĀ came later, when she was pursuing her masterā€™s degree in epidemiology. The burden of studying and sports was becoming too heavy, and she was on the verge of quitting the track.Ā ā€œI was actually failing. Not like that cute ā€˜failing,ā€™ where people are like, ā€˜Haha!ā€™ Like, I was gonna drop the class,ā€Ā the runner recalled.

This time, it was her motherā€™s example that kept her afloat.Ā RandallĀ had a hard childhood,Ā ThomasĀ recalled, growing up in poverty and, in her youth, managing to study for a PhD while raisingĀ GabbyĀ and her brotherĀ Andrew.Ā ā€œI remember thinking, if she could do that, then whatever I was doing was not hard,ā€Ā the sprinter explained.

With the agonizing decision of whether to quit classes or leave the track,Ā ThomasĀ enlisted the help of a dedicated teacher and, withĀ Randallā€™sĀ example in mind, chose an elite track program very close to a top-level educational program in Austin, Texas.

ā€œI was not even close to being an Olympian myself. But I forced myself to go train with them, and I forced myself to get my butt kicked in practice every day for two years, so that when the time came, I was ready to make the Olympic team,ā€Ā ThomasĀ explained.

In the end, her sacrifice paid off big time. Not only did she earn her masterā€™s of public health in epidemiology, but she has stood on the Olympic podium five times and already has her sights set onĀ Los Angeles 2028. At just 27 years old, the sky is the limit forĀ Gabrielle Lisa Thomas.
